THE KNITWEAR SCENE AND TRENDS FOR 23/24 – The revival of handcrafting

The world of knitwear features more and more on some of the most important catwalks in high fashion.

The pandemic, increasing awareness of sustainability and the dizzying growth of social networks have all undoubtedly contributed to this growth.

During the months of isolation, the world rediscovered all those handicrafts which helped to create a routine and keep hand and mind focused on a task. One of the forgotten pastimes which made a dramatic comeback was knitting. As a result of this boom, the public developed a greater appreciation of these techniques carefully carried out by hand.

That period saw the world facing a situation that was worrying, to say the least, in terms of the future of our planet. This led to younger people in particular showing greater interest in seeking out sustainable products, from a circular system of raw materials, and with a focus on production, consumption and disposal.

Last but not least, the dramatic surge in social platforms allows news, photos and videos to be shared instantly, bridging the gap between the public and the world of high fashion, previously considered out of reach. Attending a runway show is no longer the preserve of the showbiz elite or the upper echelons of fashion, but is now an experience available to all via the simple smartphone, making each garment worn on the catwalk appear more accessible and more desirable.

All of this has had a positive effect on the reputation of the fashion system, recalibrating the expectations of the end clients and at least partially leading them away from the whirlwind of fast fashion, which in recent years has diverted public attention towards unsustainable and consumerist standards.

The return of handcrafting as a value is undoubtedly a boost for knitwear, as its creation depends on handcrafted processes with mostly natural or recyclable materials, which offer the chance to experiment with bright colours, fancy embellishments and unique shapes.
